The “TTBL Player of the Month for March”: Benedikt Duda (TTC Schwalbe Bergneustadt)
In a social media poll, fans of the Table Tennis Bundesliga (TTBL) were able to vote for their “TTBL Player of the Month for March” following the WTT Champions in C-Star Contender in Chennai, India, and three additional TTBL matchdays. A total of five candidates were up for election (in alphabetical order): Benedikt Duda (TTC Schwalbe Bergneustadt), Kirill Gerassimenko (Werder Bremen), Anton Källberg (Borussia Düsseldorf), Luka Mladenovic (TTC Zugbrücke Grenzau), and Romain Ruiz (Bergneustadt). Duda received the most votes.
He wins and wins and wins: Even before the final two rounds of the regular season, Benedikt Duda can look back on a remarkable second half of the TTBL season without a single loss. With his five wins in the past three league matches for TTC Schwalbe Bergneustadt, the European silver medalist not only solidified his lead in the TTBL player rankings but also played a key role in his team’s early qualification for the Liebherr TTBL Final4.
As the crunch time began, the TTBL community recognized Duda’s consistency at the national level across all standings: In the vote for “TTBL Player of the Month for March,” the Oberbergisch team’s point machine—who has emerged victorious in all 13 of his matches since the start of the year—received the most votes. The result can be considered a belated birthday present, as Duda had just turned 32 on Holy Saturday.
Doch die Auszeichnung hatte sich der Nationalspieler durch seine Erfolge gegen Andre Bertelsmeier (TSV Bad Königshofen), Marcos Freitas, Liao Cheng-Ting (beide Post SV Mühlhausen) sowie Juan Perez und Jo Yokotani (beide TTC OE Clarity Telefonie-System Bad Homburg) natürlich sportlich verdient. Welches Niveau seine Siegesserie in der TTBL ungeachtet ausgebliebener Topresultate auf internationaler Bühne widerspiegelt, macht ein Vergleich mit seinen Liga-Kollegen deutlich: Von allen Stars in den Top 10 der besten Spieler hat außer Duda nur Olympiasieger und Superstar Fan Zhendong von Champions-League-Gewinner 1. FC Saarbrücken-TT in der zweiten Saisonhälfte noch kein Match verloren.
Duda und Fan haben allerdings noch eine weitere Gemeinsamkeit: Nach dem zweimaligen Einzel-Weltmeister im Vormonat gewann nun auch der Linkshänder schon zum zweiten Mal in der laufenden TTBL-Saison die Abstimmung der Fans, nachdem Duda bereits die Wahl zum „TTBL-Spieler des Monats September“ gewonnen hatte.
Gleichwohl geriet Dudas abermalige Wahl zu einem regelrechten Krimi. Seine nur fünf Prozent Vorsprung im Fan-Voting auf Mladenovic, der Grenzau mit drei Erfolgen in Serie erheblich zum Klassenerhalt verhelfen konnte, bedeutete das knappste Ergebnis seit Einführung der monatlichen Abstimmung.
